Changing the Color

Using the color features available on your X4 Configure webpage and the Color Picker window in your X4 HUD you can achieve any color, including all those usually needed to match natural skin tones on your avatar.  For a novice the process may be a little challenging at first, but a little patience is all that is required for you to make a perfect match.  Also, do not be daunted by the number of steps - many of them you will not likely have to do (but are included so that we handle everyone’s possible needs) and many are repetitive (like navigating to the X4 HUD Color Picker and getting to your Configure webpage) as we make no assumptions about where someone may be starting the process off from. Just take it one step at a time and read the instructions and you will be fine.

The following are step-by-step instructions on how to change the color of your X4 item from scratch and are recommended for anyone changing their skin color for the first time or for those who are not overly familiar with how coloration works in general. If you are already very comfortable with adjusting tint using the X4 HUD Color Picker window you can likely skip these instructions and go right to the Color Picker window informational page.

(First, we will erase any coloring that you may have previously applied.  If this is the first time you have ever done anything at all related to coloring of your X4 item you can skip down to Step 9.   If you have ever touched the Color Picker window in your X4 HUD, used the Skin Matching system or inserted color values on your configure webpage you must do these steps first:)

1.  Make sure you are wearing your X4 HUD and X4 body part that you want to color.

2.  Click the ‘X4’ button on your X4 HUD.

3.  Click the area on the screen that corresponds to the body part you are coloring.

4.  Click the ‘Color’ button.

5.  On the Color Picker window click the white square color tile, or the white circle button.

6.  Click in the ‘Color Target’ box.

7.  Click the part of your X4 body part that you wish to color (please note that some X4 body parts have different parts that can be colored independently so be sure to click on the specific part you want to color.)  The name of that part should appear in the ‘Color Target’ box.  (If it doesn’t check here for reasons why it might not.)

8.  Click the ‘Apply’ button.

(Next we will check to see if your avatar skin is in our Skin Matching system, which would greatly simplify the coloring process. If you already know your skin is not in the Skin Matching system skip down to Step 21: )

9.  Make sure you are wearing your X4 HUD and X4 body part that you want to color.

10. Left click on your X4 body part and from the dialog box select ‘Options’.

11. From the dialog box select ‘Configure’ and open the web page that is presented.

12. Find the Profile for the body part that you wish to color - it should have a green checkmark next to it in the Profiles list.

13. From the drop down menu next to that Profile select ‘Change Appearance’.

14. Scroll down the Appearance page until you see the red banner that says ‘Skin Match!’ and click the ‘Start’ button.

15. Check the list for the brand name of the skin you are wearing.  If it is there click it.  If it is not there skip down to the manual coloring instructions below.

16. Check the list for the model name and specific skin tone for your skin.  If it is there click it.  If it is not there skip down to the manual coloring instructions below.

17. Click the link for the specific type of skin you want to use.  If you only own one skin texture then you will only have one option.

18. Back in-world left click on your X4 body part and from the dialog box select ‘Options’.

19. From the dialog box select ‘Sync’.

20. From the dialog box select ‘Reload’.

Please allow the sync to complete without clicking anything. The color you chose will now be applied to your X4 body part.  In some cases you may decide that a little fine tuning will be needed to suit your preferences - if this is the case skip down to the manual coloring instructions below.

(To manually color your X4 body part:)

21. Make sure you are wearing your X4 HUD and X4 body part that you want to color.

22. Make sure you are standing in an area using normal lighting.  It is recommended that you not try changing the color of your X4 body parts in a region that is in ‘night’ or which has special atmospheric or artificial lighting effects.  If you are using ‘face lights’, disable them during this process. If possible, set your ‘Sun’ setting to ‘Midday’ to get the most balanced light conditions. (In the standard SL Viewer this setting may be found in the ‘World’ menu under ‘Sun’.)

23. Left click on your X4 body part and from the dialog box select ‘Options’.

24. From the dialog box select ‘Configure’ and open the web page that is presented.

25. Find the Profile for the body part that you wish to color - it should have a green checkmark next to it in the Profiles list.

26. From the drop down menu next to that Profile select ‘Change Appearance’.

27. Scroll down in the Appearance page to the Skin textures section and click the box next to ‘Tintable’ to select it. (If you are comfortable in your ability to adjust coloring using the Color Picker window of your X4 HUD you can choose at this point to instead select a skin texture that is close to but lighter than the color you are trying to match.  Please use the ‘Tintable’ texture if you are a novice or if you have experience issues in the past with achieving the color you want.)

28. Click the ‘Apply Changes’ button at the bottom of the page.

29. Back in-world left click on your X4 body part and from the dialog box select ‘Options’.

30. From the dialog box select ‘Sync’.

31. From the dialog box select ‘Reload’. Please allow the sync to complete without clicking anything.

32. Click the ‘X4’ button on your X4 HUD.

33. Click the area on the screen that corresponds to the body part you are coloring.

34. Click the ‘Color’ button.

35. Create your color in one of the 6 color tiles.  You have several options on how to do this, so choose the method that feels most comfortable to you.  Please read here for instructions on using all of the color creation options on the X4 HUD Color Picker window, and then return to this instruction list when you have the color you want saved in one of the color tiles.

36. Click in the ‘Color Target’ box.

37.  Click the part of your X4 body part that you wish to color (please note that some X4 body parts have different parts that can be colored independently so be sure to click on the specific part you want to color.)  The name of that part should appear in the ‘Color Target’ box.  (If it doesn’t check here for reasons why it might not.)

38.  Click the ‘Apply’ button.

The color you created will now be applied to the part of your X4 body part that you targeted.  Repeat these steps (starting at step 33) for each section of the X4 body part your are coloring if the body part has more than one section that can be colored independently.

If the color looks a little bit off or you would like to do more fine tuning of the color just modify the color tile you created and apply the color again (starting at step 35)
