Color Picker Tools

Creating a specific color can be a little challenging, especially if you are completely unfamiliar with working with colors and how tinting works. Rest assured that anyone can do it, just takes a little patience and a fine touch depending on how precise you need to be.

Before you actually create your color be sure to select one of the 6 color tiles provided on your X4 HUD Color Picker window by clicking on it.  The color you create will appear in that tile. (Please note that it is not recommended that you use the current white tile, as white is a color you may find yourself wanting to use.)

From here you have several options on how to create your color.  Find the one that makes the most sense to you and which will help you get as close as possible to the end result you are looking for.

IMPORTANT - if you are applying color to an item that already has a color that isn’t white the new color will be ADDED TO the existing color, it will not replace it.  This is especially important to note if you are coloring an X4 Body part that has a non-white skin texture on it.  In this case you would not be looking to create the color you want from scratch, you would be looking to fine tune the existing color.  Only try to create the color you want from scratch if you have the ‘Tintable’ (white) skin texture on your X4 item.

If you know the RGB/HEX value for the color you want:

1.  Make sure you are wearing your X4 HUD.

2.  Click on the ‘Colors’ icon in the main window of your X4 HUD.

3.  Click on one of the square color tiles in the Color Picker window (this is the tile that will hold the new color you are creating). It is recommended that you not click on the white square tile.

4.  Type into spatial

        color rrr ggg bbb

replacing ‘rrr’, ‘bbb’, and ‘ggg’ with the appropriate color values,

OR

         color #rrggbb

replacing ‘rr’, ‘bb’, and ‘gg’ with the appropriate color values.

The color will now be in the selected tile. Click here to return to the skin coloring instructions   or   click here to return to the Accessory coloring instructions.

To Use the Slider Bar Color Controls:

The three sliders on the upper right side of the Color Picker window will allow you to tweak the color in your selected swatch by adding or removing red, green and blue from it. Clicking toward the left side of the red slider will, for example, decrease the amount of red included in your color. Clicking toward the right end of the red slider will increase the amount of red in your color.  The sliders are very easy to use and provide a moderate degree of precision in helping you narrow down the color to the exact one you want, though it certainly will not be as precise as knowing the color values ahead of time.

If you are having trouble clicking in the exact spot on the slider that you want, consider increasing the size of your X4 HUD temporarily so that you have more room to work

with.

The color will now be in the selected tile. Click here to return to the skin coloring instructions   or   click here to return to the Accessory coloring instructions.

To Use the RGB Color Wheel:

This is the standard color wheel you’ll see in many applications. It is also the same as the color chooser available in the SL Edit window (just in a 360 degree round form instead of a square form).  If the RGB color wheel is not currently showing on the Color Picker window click on the rainbow colored disc at the bottom of the Color Picker window. Once the color wheel is showing simply click on the spot on the wheel that holds the color you want to select it. Try clicking in the area immediately around that spot to tweak the color as needed.

If you are having trouble clicking in the exact spot on the wheel that you want, consider increasing the size of your X4 HUD temporarily so that you have more room to work with.

The color will now be in the selected tile. Click here to return to the skin coloring instructions   or   click here to return to the Accessory coloring instructions.

To Use the Fleshtones Gradient Box:

The fleshtones box is a custom palette designed to make it more convenient for you to create a standard fleshtone color. To bring up the Fleshtones bow click the tan-colored disc at the bottom of the Color Picker window. As with the RGB Color Wheel, simply click on the spot that has the color you want to select it. Try clicking to the right of your selection to make the color lighter, click further to the left to make it darker. Move up and down through the bands t make more drastic changes.

If you are having trouble clicking in the exact spot on the box that you want, consider increasing the size of your X4 HUD temporarily so that you have more room to work with.

The color will now be in the selected tile. Click here to return to the skin coloring instructions   or   click here to return to the Accessory coloring instructions.

To Use the Greyscale Gradient Box:

The Greyscale box is a custom palette designed to make it more convenient for you to create a shade of grey. To bring up the Greyscale bow click the grey-colored disc at the bottom of the Color Picker window. As with the RGB Color Wheel, simply click on the spot that has the color you want to select it. The higher in the box you click the lighter the shade will be, the lower you click the darker it will be.

If you are having trouble clicking in the exact spot on the box that you want, consider increasing the size of your X4 HUD temporarily so that you have more room to work with.
